The Effects of Alcoholism Alcohol indefinitely changed my life. My husband is an alcoholic. What is alcoholism? Why do people drink? What are the effects on the alcoholic and their families? How do you know you have a problem. What is the treatment? Is there a cure? How has this affected my life? People from all walks of life drink. The difference is: do you control the alcohol or does it control you? Alcoholism is a constant battle that many people struggle with. Alcoholism formerly called alcohol dependence or alcohol addiction, is the more severe end of the alcohol use disorder spectrum. It is a destructive pattern of alcohol use that includes tolerance to or withdrawal from the substance, using more alcohol or using it for longer than planned, and trouble reducing its use or inability to use it in moderation. Other potential symptoms include spending an inordinate amount of time getting, using, or recovering from the use of alcohol, compromised functioning, and/or continuing to use alcohol despite an awareness of the detrimental effects it is having on one s life (Dryden-Edwards). People drink for various reasons. There are the social drinkers who drink when they go out with friends. There are the lone drinkers who stay at home and drink alone. There are also the heavy drinkers who don’t care if they are out or home alone they just drink to get drunk. Many people turn to alcohol as a coping tool.
